Cuyuna Fat Bike Weekend

Covid thwarted initial plans for my friend to join me at my cabin for a weekend of fat biking in Cuyuna, Minnesota. Eager to get some miles on the groomed singletrack, I went up anyways and got some small projects done too. The cabin has been a dream of mine for many years. So much of my focus has been on remodeling it that I haven’t taken the time to share much. Here are some photos from the weekend shot with my new Fuji X100V.

Last summer I installed all the windows, double doors, built the screen porch, and painted it black.

There are two 48” x 48” fixed picture windows on either side of the wood stove. The morning coffee view is so relaxing, and there’s something about the shape and texture of the picnic table on the snow that I love. In the future I hope a sauna with cedar siding is visible in the distance!

It was time to install coat hooks to hang all the winter fat biking gear on. With friends coming in a few weeks there needs to be space for everyone’s stuff. These wooden hooks were the perfect shape and texture for the vibe I wanted.

A large tree fell near the cabin late in the fall. With temps below zero, the wood splits easily. It was time to start chopping and stacking it so it can dry out this summer. There should be enough to last all next winter.

My 45NRTH x Red Wing Wölvhammer boots are the key to warm feet when riding fat bikes in the extreme cold of Northern Minnesota. They come with me on every trip to Cuyuna in the winter.

The trails are groomed to perfection, like a translucent white ribbon winding through the forest between deep mine lakes tucked into deep valleys. Manuel drive is one of my favorite trails, as it climbs to a plateau and winds around the edge overlooking several mine lakes.

The classic look and feel of leather is comforting on sub-zero rides. There is a lot of other technology in these gloves that delivers comfort, but the leather is beautiful and I love these gloves.

In remaining weeks of winter (there are a lot of them in Minnesota), I will be spending a lot of time up north with my camera, friends and loved ones. There is still a lot of learning to do with this new X100V and I plan on sharing here as I continue refining my skills, working on the cabin and spend time on the fat bike. 78 miles last week. Still feeling that! A full gallery is below.
